SYNAGONISTIS: GREEK JEWS IN THE NATIONAL RESISTANCE @ MJCCA
Apr 15 @ 6:00 am – May 15 @ 5:00 pm

Synagonistis

The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) is pleased to host SYNAGONISTIS: GREEK JEWS IN THE NATIONAL RESISTANCE, an exhibition about Greek Jews who escaped Nazi forces and joined Greece’s resistance movements during the Holocaust. The exhibition is on display at the MJCCA’s Katz Family Mainstreet Gallery through May 15, 2016.

SYNAGONISTIS is a traveling exhibition presented under the auspices of the Jewish Museum of Greece and the Greek Secretariat General for Communication. It is made possible through the support of the American Friends of the Jewish Museum in Athens, the Greek Embassy in Washington, the Greek Consulate in Atlanta, the Atlanta Regional Office of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and the MJCCA’s Katz Family Mainstreet Gallery.

Compiled by the Jewish Museum of Greece, SYNAGONISTIS is the product of five years of research into the personal stories of men and women of various Jewish communities around Greece who took up arms and headed to the mountains to join the armed Resistance in the country. Photographs, documents, letters, proclamations, underground newspapers, and other relevant materials are presented for the first time. “Synagonistis” is the Greek word for “fellow fighter” and it’s exactly this notion that the exhibition is highlighting: Greek Jews fought side by side with Greek Christians against the same enemy, in defense of the same country. Therefore, it is our duty to save them from oblivion and this is the goal of this exhibition. “It is also a voice against anti-Semitism and racism,” said Press Counselor Christos Failadis, exhibition manager on the part of the Greek Embassy in Washington, D.C

The Katz Family Mainstreet Gallery is located at the MJCCA at Zaban Park, 5342 Tilly Mill Road, Dunwoody. Gallery hours:  Monday–Thursday, 6 a.m.–10 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m.–6 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.; and Sunday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Admission is free, and the community is welcome. To organize a group visit contact Kim Goodfriend, Gallery Manager, at 678.812.4071.
