Winged Words: Greek Poetry in Song @ Kopleff Recital Hall, Georgia State University
Oct 27 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
winged-wordsThe GSU Center for Hellenic Studies is pleased to announce an upcoming musical event on Thursday evening, October 27, 2016, at 7:00 pm.
The world-renowned mezzo soprano, Ms. Alexandra Gravas, will join us from Athens, Greece, to present a special program of modern Greek poetry set to music; she will be accompanied by her pianist, Mr. Petros Bouras.
The program is entitled “Wingéd Words”: Greek Poetry in Music and Song,” and will take place at the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall [10 Peachtree Center Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30303] on the campus of the Georgia State University.
The first half of the program will be dedicated to the poetry of Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933), and the second half will feature other important Greek artists including Nobel Laureate Odysseas Elytis (1911-1996), Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1994), Yannis Ritsos (1909-1990), Nobel Laureate George Seferis (1900-1971), and Mikis Theodorakis (b. 1925).
Ms. Gravas has designed the program specially for this event, which is designed to coincide with the Center’s first major publication: “Subterranean Histories: Constantine Cavafy and the Poetics of Memory,” Studies in the Literary Imagination48.2 (2016). The volume includes pieces by Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk, novelist Jane Alison, and several prominent scholars of Classics, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies including Gregory Jusdanis, Michael Lippman, Anne McClanan, and Gonda van Steen. Copies of this publication will be available at the concert.
The concert will be held in the Florence Kopleff Recital Hall on the campus of Georgia State University at 7:00pm; a wine reception will follow immediately after the event.
The Center for Hellenic Studies is especially grateful for the support of the Honorable Giorgos Panagiotidis, Greek Consul of Atlanta, Dean Sara Rosen and the entire Dean’s Office in the College of Arts and Sciences, Annie Latta and Pearl McHaney at the Center for Collaborative and International Arts (CENCIA), Bram Creighton in the GSU School of Music, and Aikaterina Grigoriadou, President of the Hellenic Student Association.

Nov 4 @ 5:00 pm – Nov 6 @ 5:00 pm

We thank you for your past support as a filmgoer and are pleased to invite you to the third annual Best of NYC Greek Film Festival in Atlanta.  The film festival returns November 4-6, 2016, at a new and exciting venue, the Atlanta History Center’s McElreath Hall in beautiful Buckhead.

As in previous years, the festival carefully selects and brings the best of current Greek films to US audiences, shown with English subtitles. This year, we plan to bring six current feature films to the festival, which will truly represent “the Best” of the NYC Greek Film Festival.

Advance tickets for the films, film packages and the ‘It’s a Wrap” Closing Reception will go on sale on September 23rd via our ticket vendor, TicketAlternative.com.  Your film tickets will include free parking and free admission to the Atlanta History Center museums and grounds on the day of the film!

In the meantime, please consider becoming a festival Sponsor and/or placing an Advertisement for yourself or your business in our 2016 Festival Program Book.  We offer Sponsorship and Ad levels for every budget, plus your support will be highlighted to the 1000+ participants we expect.  We’ve attached Sponsor and Ad Forms for your convenience.

Lastly, if you’ve enjoyed the film festival in the past, please help spread the word to your friends and colleagues; better yet, bring them along to enjoy intelligent feature films in an incomparable setting.  See you at the movies!
